Earlier this month, our child’s school organized a field trip to the Van Wezel to see a Schooltime Performance of Giraffes Can’t Dance. There was a plea to parents for chaperones and while we were picking him up from aftercare his teacher slyly mentioned that we were “her first pick”. I suspect that her qualification for “first pick” may have been our physical proximity at the moment, but as a parent, I knew how much it would mean to my child to be there. As a manager, I also understood the importance of leading by example when it comes to prioritizing family.

One hallmark of Parenting Matters is our family-first culture. We recognize the critical importance of fostering a work environment that supports not only the professional growth of our employees but also the holistic well-being of their families. Understanding that when we support both parents and children, we create a ripple effect of positive outcomes that extend beyond the workplace.

This way of thinking is a core tenet of the 2Gen approach. Which was also celebrated this month at the region’s third 2Gen educational summit hosted by the Community Foundation of Sarasota and the Aspen Ascend Institute at the Florida Studio Theater. While attending as a guest and panelist, I was reminded again and again that it’s moments like these that remind us of the human side of work and the profound impact that a supportive workplace culture can have on the lives of employees and their families.

Recognizing that the demands of parenting don’t adhere to a nine-to-five schedule, and giving employees the autonomy to accommodate both their professional and family responsibilities creates a foundation of empathy, compassion, and understanding. Whether it’s attending a school play, a doctor’s appointment, or simply spending quality time with their family, I am proud to lead by example and commit to making a meaningful difference in the lives of our employees and their families. P.S. Spoiler Alert, Giraffes Can Dance.
