Community in Action

Many Hands, One Season of Joy

Every holiday season, something pretty special happens at Parenting Matters.

It doesn’t start with shopping lists or wrapping paper, it starts with people. Neighbors. Local organizations. Faith communities. Government partners. Volunteers. Donors. Folks who simply see a need and decide to step in.

This year, our Holiday Adoption Program brought together a powerful network of community support to serve 45 families – nearly 180 individuals, including 147 children. And while the numbers are meaningful, what matters most is how it happens.

What makes this program unique is simple, but deeply intentional: everyone in the household is included. Not just the kids. Parents and caregivers, too.

Because families thrive when everyone feels seen.

Community members and local organizations, including private donors, Manatee County Government, Trinity Lutheran Church, and the Riverstrand homeowners association – came together to adopt families, purchase gifts, and help ensure Christmas morning feels full and joyful. Some donors didn’t stop at giving gifts; they showed up in person, rolling up their sleeves to help wrap presents, sort items, and be part of the magic behind the scenes.

That spirit of “all hands in” is what makes this program so special.

Parents are often surprised when they learn that they’ll receive gifts as well. Sometimes they ask for cozy pajamas to stay warm during winter nights. Sometimes it’s something practical like pots and pans so they can cook meals for their children, or household items that make daily life a little easier. One family received a crib so their baby would have a safe place to sleep. These aren’t extravagant requests. They are thoughtful, purposeful, and rooted in care for their families.

And then there’s the final step – delivery.

Our Parenting Educators personally deliver the gifts to each family, ensuring everything arrives in time for Christmas morning. It’s a moment filled with anticipation, gratitude, and connection. It’s also a reminder that this program is about more than presents; it’s about relationships and trust built throughout the year.

We’ve been told more than once that this will be the first time a family has ever had gifts waiting on Christmas morning. Those moments are powerful, but what stands out even more is the strength behind them: parents doing their best, children feeling supported, and a community choosing to show up together.

This program doesn’t exist without partnership.

It exists because businesses, faith communities, neighborhood groups, government partners, and individuals believe that when we wrap families in support, we all benefit. It exists because people give not only resources, but time, energy, and heart.

As we reflect on this year’s Holiday Adoption Program, we’re filled with gratitude for the donors who gave generously, the volunteers who helped wrap and organize, and the Parenting Educators who carried this effort all the way to families’ doors.

This is what Community in Action looks like.

And it’s proof that when a community comes together with intention and care, the holidays become brighter for everyone.
