Power of Parenting in Building Community Connection
By Katie Becker, Executive Director
One of the reasons I love Parenting Matters’ mission is because it reaches everyone. Parenting is something we all understand. We carry memories from our own childhood that shape who we are today, both good and bad. Yesterday was my mom’s birthday. She passed away two years ago. In a moment of reflection, I recalled the many ways she helped build a sense of connection where I felt safe and nurtured. Volunteering with Girl Scouts, introducing me to community theater, enrolling me in sports (which did not end well). I recognize these activities are privileges not everyone has access to. But at Parenting Matters, we have the opportunity to be a conduit. We bring people together in meaningful ways that help families feel connected and supported, strengthening the roots that help us all grow.
That is what Parenting Matters offers to families today. For parents, especially in the early years, it is easy to feel isolated and unsure. One mom who joined our Musical Motion classes shared that she spent her days feeling alone at home with her toddler, not knowing where to turn. After attending a few classes, she said it was not just about the music and activities. It was about finding other parents to talk with, share stories, and realize she was not alone.
Through programs like Musical Motion, home visits, and parenting workshops, we are helping parents build those same kinds of connections. We work with schools, libraries, healthcare providers, and local organizations to make sure parents have places where they feel welcomed and supported.
If you’re a parent feeling isolated or unsure, I encourage you to take that first step—join a parenting class, attend a Musical Motion session, or reach out to a local resource like Parenting Matters. You are not alone.
And, if you’re someone who knows a parent who might be struggling, extend a hand. Share a resource, offer encouragement, or simply let them know you see them. Together, we can build the kind of community where every family feels supported and connected.
When parents feel confident and supported, children grow up stronger, and all of us benefit.
I also want to thank the many partners across our region who work in concert with us to make this possible. Schools, healthcare providers, government agencies, and community organizations all play a part in building a stronger, more connected place for families to grow and thrive.
Thank you for helping make these connections possible. Your support brings parents and families together in ways that truly last.
Warmly,
Katie Becker
